not the "change" i was looking for

Wish President Barack Obama felt the same way…

“It is my strong belief that the government has to treat all citizens equally. I come from that in part out of personal experience. When you're a black guy named Barack Obama, you know what it's like to be on the outside. And so my concern is continually to make sure that the rights that are conferred by the state are equal for all people.

That's why I opposed DOMA in 2006 when I ran for the Senate. That's why I am a strong supporter not of a weak version of civil unions, but of a strong version, in which the rights that are conferred at the federal level to persons who are part of the same sex union are compatible.

When it comes to federal rights, the over 1,100 rights that right now are not being given to same sex couples, I think that's unacceptable, and as president of the United States, I am going to fight hard to make sure that those rights are available.”

- Senator Barack Obama

…I thought I finally had a President I could believe in, but, as of now it looks like I very, very wrong.

I'm not sure it makes you "very very wrong." Change just isn't quite happening at as rapid a pace as it should. It is my understanding that the DOJ memo with the crappy language was just about one particular court case challenging DOMA, and there are still legislative efforts being made (and ones that Obama referenced yesterday in signing that mostly meaningless federal employees bill) to overturn DOMA. It is all very confusing, but I'm not quite ready to write him off just yet. (I was fired up last weekend about DOMA and Don't Ask, Don't Tell, but I've been talked down a bit).

no, it does make me VERY, VERY wrong and until i see him actually working "very hard" towards real equality my faith in him will not resurface. i am no longer okay with waiting around to be treated as an equal in my own country. his silence and lack of action is inexcusable and some bullshit memorandum is not going to make up for it. for god's sake i'm living in a 3rd world country right now that has been a democracy for a whoppin' 16 years and they have equality. my patience has run dry.

the last thing i want is for our community to be talked down...we need to be angry and we need to fight for what is right-right now, not when politicians believe it is a good time for us to actually get equal rights.
